Shiga Kogen Shizenhogo (Protection-of-mature) Center - - - - Hasuike Area

Housed in Shiga Kogen Sogo Kaikan 98, the main focus is the "Relationship between Nature and Human Being", which exhibits the nature of Shiga Kogen. In the “Nature Salon” visitors can enjoy handicraft, using natural materials and in the Lecture Room they can study the nature.

Olympics & Paralympics Kinenkan - - - - Hasuike Area

Commemorative Hall of the Nagano Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 1998.

Higashitateyama Botanical Garden - - - - top of Mt.Higashitate

With a wonderful view from the top of the Mt. Higashitateyama (2,030m), visitors can observe nearly 500 species of alpine plants along the 30 minute trail in the garden.

Shinshu University Scientific Research Institute

Located in the primeval forest surrounding Mt. Shigayama, where the soil is the result of a swirling stream of lava, makes it a rare area in the world. A Nature Observation Trail is opened to the public.

Fishing

It’s possible to fish in Shiga Kogen at Maruike (Maru Pond) and Biwaike (Biwa Pond). ?Rental fishing gear is available.

Iwana (Char) Fishing You can also fish at Zakogawa (Zako River), but you have to purchase a “gyogyoken” (a fishing pass) at Okushiga Kogen Kanrijimishyo. Zako River is one of a few habitats for char. Fishing is prohibited from October 1st till April 5th.

Boats
Boats are available for rent at Biwaike (Biwa Pond), Maruike (Maru Pond), and Kidoike (Kido Pond).

Gosetsu no Yakata - - - - Kanbayashi Area

This is a folk-custom data hall. Exhibits historical records from heavy snowfall areas. It was once used as a house for the village head during heavy snowfalls and has since been reconstructed.

Shiga Kogen Roman Museum ? at Kambayashi

Exhibits cultural heritage data such as the "facet" glasses of the Roman Empire. Come into the moment and be released into the twinkle of stars where no consciousness of time exists.

Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park

This may be the only place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in natural hot spring water. The Wild Monkey Park is in Jigokudani National Park which protects wild animals living in the Yokoyugawa River area. Visitors can observe closely many wild monkeys (Nihon Zaru) fed by the park rangers. It is a more than pleasant scene seeing parent and child monkeys sitting in the hot water spa, warming up and washing apples and eating them.
There is a big fountain (Natural attraction) in Jigokudani, a 90 degree hot fountain blows with a roaring sound 20 meters into the sky.

Zenkoji

Zenkoji Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Japan. One of the oldest Buddhist images is housed in its main hall.

Obuse: The town of Hokusai and chestnuts

Traditional chestnuts confectionery shops stand on the main street. The Hokusai Art Museum exhibits the paintings of Katsushika Hokusai, the Ukiyoe painter.

Tanaka Honke, a wealthy merchant’s mansion

The mansion of a famous merchant of the Edo period (1733) is opened to the public. Traditional Kimonos, beautiful plates and other inheritances of a luxury lifestyle are displayed.

Shirane Volcano and Onioshidashi

Mt. Shiranesan is an active volcano with three volcanic lakes on its summit. In Onioshidashi visitor can observe the devastating lava flow from the great eruption of Mt. Asamayama in 1783.
