Treat yourself to some truly delicious local dishes made with Nemagaridake, a tender type of bamboo shoot harvested in early summer around Shiga Kogen. One must-try is Takenoko Miso Soup — a comforting regional specialty from the Hokushin (Northern Nagano) area. This hearty soup combines fresh Nemagaridake with canned mackerel for a simple yet unforgettable taste of mountain tradition.

Discover one of the most intriguing sights, the Genji Fireflies of Ishinoyu Hot Springs. Found at one of the highest altitudes in Japan, this area is designated as a national natural monument.

Shiga Kogen Daija Festival
A two-day festival celebrating the legend of Onuma-ike Pond, where a mystical dragon once fell in love with a human princess. The story tells of their tragic fate and the dragon’s eternal guardianship over the serene waters. During the event, traditional ceremonies, Kagura performances, and fireworks light up the night sky, bringing the legend to life — a cherished festival that carries on the proud traditions of Shiga Kogen.

An event where you can experience Japan’s finest night sky. You can enjoy various attractions such as shooting by a professional photographer against the background of the night sky, starry sky observation, various workshops, as well as local food and drinks!

Shiga Kogen’s autumn foliage is a favorite among travelers and photographers alike. Shiga Kogen Nice! Photo Contest
Submit your original photos of scenery, meals, or moments in Shiga Kogen! Participation is free, and prizes include a 50,000 yen travel voucher, 30,000 yen accommodation voucher, guest favorite award, and original Okomin merchandise. Other participants will have a chance to receive an original Shiga Kogen tenugui in a lottery for 100 people. Held twice a year, Green and Winter seasons, domestic shipping only.
