Located on the border with Gunma Prefecture, this area is home to the highest point on Japan’s national highways. The sunrise viewed from here is truly breathtaking.

Nestled among the many lakes and ponds of Shiga Kogen, Onuma Pond stands out as the largest and most striking.
A short detour from the Ikemeguri Trail leads you to a quaint shrine and a charming torii gate.

At Japan’s highest point on a national highway (2,172 meters above sea level), a stone monument marks the spot — perfect for a commemorative photo. Parking is available, but please be cautious of passing vehicles.

Experience one of the “100 Best Sunset Spots in Shinshu” with breathtaking views. Beyond the iconic Kasagatake of Shiga Kogen, you can admire the peaks of the Northern Shinshu Five Mountains and more. During the green season, take the Sky Lifter and Sky Rater to reach the summit of Yokoteyama at 2,307 meters.
At around 2,100 meters, Nozoki remains refreshingly cool even in summer, making it the perfect spot to escape the heat. Take a break at the Yokoteyama Drive-In or the 2307 Sky Café. In autumn, enjoy the sea of clouds, vibrant fall foliage, and starry skies—immersing yourself in the spectacular natural beauty of Shiga Kogen.

The Rock Garden (Alpine Plant Educational Garden) and the museum are managed by Shinshu University’s Faculty of Education.

Located near the central area of Shiga Kogen, right next to the Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki bus terminal. From May to November, walking around the Hasu-ike Pond is a refreshing experience.
*In winter the area is covered in snow, making it inaccessible on foot.
This is the source of the hot spring water used by nearby accommodations. You can even see the steam rising from a distance. The air is filled with the scent of sulfur.
This is a rare viewing spot for the Genji-botaru firefly, a species found only in Japan. From early July to mid-August, you can witness their magical, glowing dance in the night.
*During this period, traffic is guided by the Shiga Kogen Genji-botaru Firefly Park Management Committee.

Winter Road Closure: From 10:00am on 5th November 2025, the Ichinose Junction to Mt. Iwasuge Trailhead will be closed for the winter season.
Please be sure to use the emergency portable toilet provided.
After use, place it in the collection box at the trailhead or take it back with you.
Do not leave it behind. Your cooperation in protecting the natural environment of the national park is greatly appreciated.
