From the summit of Mt. Higashidate (Higashitateyama) at 2,000 meters above sea level, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Northern Alps and Onuma-ike Pond, the largest pond in Shiga Kogen. During the green season, the Higashitateyama Alpine Botanical Garden is open, showcasing around 500 species of alpine plants in full bloom from June to September. (Admission is free; please wear comfortable shoes.) At the gondola summit station, you’ll find "THE ROOFTOP DINING" restaurant, "Alpina" stand café, and an observation deck. Enjoy the highlands in every season: cool summer breezes for a refreshing retreat, vibrant autumn leaves stretching across the mountains, and a pristine winter landscape perfect for skiing. At 2,000 meters, you’ll have a front-row seat to some of the most breathtaking views in Shiga Kogen. From the 2,307-meter-high Mt. Yokote (Yokoteyama) View Terrace, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view and Mt. Fuji and the Sea of Japan when weather conditions are favorable.


Snow monsters are formed when water vapour or water droplets at temperatures below -5 degrees Celsius blow onto coniferous trees, freeze, and then snow gets in through the gaps and hardens. In Japan, Zao and Hakkouda are famous for snow monsters, but of course you can also see them at Yokoteyama ski resort, the highest ski resort in Japan!
