Overview
Winter in Shiga Kogen: A Season of Beauty and Balance
Nestled in Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park, Shiga Kogen is more than a winter wonderland — it’s part of a UNESCO-recognized Biosphere Reserve, where nature and people have long coexisted in harmony.
In winter, snow blankets the forests, wetlands, and peaks, transforming the landscape into a quiet, pristine world. While skiing, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying the mountain air, we invite you to experience this special place with care and curiosity.
Shiga Kogen is home to animals like Japanese hares, red foxes, serows, and even elusive ermines in their white winter coats. To help protect this delicate habitat:
- Do not feed or approach wild animals.
- Keep a respectful distance when taking photos.
- Take all waste with you.
- Drive slowly — wildlife may be near or on the road.
Your respect and awareness help protect this winter ecosystem for future generations. Thank you for doing your part!

Accommodation Reservations
Shiga Kogen is one of Japan’s largest ski resorts, made up of 18 interconnected ski areas. Many hotels are conveniently located right on the slopes with ski-in, ski-out access.
Several hotels have started accepting reservations, but not all hotels have begun taking bookings yet. By early October, all hotels are expected to start accepting reservations. Each hotel sets its own start date, so the booking schedule may vary.
If you already know your travel dates and preferred area, we’re happy to send you a list of accommodations that match your request. However, please note the following before contacting us:
- The Shiga Kogen Tourism Association does not manage reservations or provide availability and pricing for individual hotels.
- Each hotel handles its own booking and sets its own rates.
- We cannot check real-time availability or make reservations on your behalf.
- We can provide you with a contact list of hotels so you can reach out to them directly.
To help us provide a more accurate list, please include the following in your message:

- Any special requests (e.g. room type, onsen access, meals, etc.)
The more details you provide, the more relevant the list will be.

If Booking a Private Coach (click here to read more)
For large groups or travelers with bulky luggage, a private coach from the airport may be a convenient option. While we do not book these directly, we can provide a list of recommended companies upon request.
Consider sending your bags ahead using Japan’s convenient luggage delivery services. Just be sure to contact your hotel in advance to confirm they can accept deliveries. See the “Luggage Delivery Service” section for more details.
Coming by a rental car (click here to read more)
The main road to Shiga Kogen (Route 292) is a winding mountain road. Driving in snowy conditions can be dangerous if you’re inexperienced. We advise using alternative transportation.
- Rent a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- Ensure the vehicle is equipped with winter tires (mandatory).
- Carry snow chains as a backup in case of severe conditions.
- When renting a car at an airport or in a city, inform the rental company that you plan to drive in a snowy mountain area.
No joke — every year, there are cases where rental cars get stuck on frozen roads while heading to Shiga Kogen, causing traffic jams and accidents. Remember, Shiga Kogen is located at a high altitude!
Vehicle Overnight Stays (click here to read more)
Some visitors travel in campervans — while this can be a fun and memorable experience, please remember that Shiga Kogen is located within a national park, and environmental consideration is essential.
For this reason, overnight stays in vehicles within Shiga Kogen area are strongly discouraged out of respect for the national park and its environment.
Additionally, winter nights can reach temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F), and heavy snowfall may bury your vehicle overnight, posing serious safety risks.
- Most public toilets are closed during winter.
- There are no convenience stores or supermarkets in the area.
- Managing food, hygiene, and health in such conditions is extremely difficult.
For a safe and enjoyable stay, we highly recommend staying in a hotel.
Rental Equipment
Rental shops are available in each ski area, so you can come empty-handed if needed! Also, some hotels provide rental service for their guests. Please ask your hotel for more details.
Sizes and quantities are limited, so we recommend contacting rental shops in advance. Some shops also accept online reservations, so be sure to check ahead.
