In winter, the lifts that carry skiers transform into summer lifts once the green season arrives. These scenic rides through the air lead to breathtaking views you’d never encounter down below — panoramic landscapes, colorful alpine flower fields, and more.

Blessed with untouched forests and countless lakes and ponds, Shiga Kogen offers easy access to its spectacular mountain scenery via gondolas and chairlifts. One of the most unforgettable sights is the sea of clouds that spreads out below — truly a view worth seeing.
 

Shiga Kogen Golden Line

This route connects the Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki (the gateway to Shiga Kogen) with the 2,000-meter-high summit of Mt. Higashidate via three gondolas.
At the top, you’ll find The Rooftop Dining, a restaurant that evokes the atmosphere of a European alpine resort. From the terrace, enjoy sweeping views of the Northern Shinshu Five Peaks and the Northern Japanese Alps.
 
In the vast 10-hectare Higashitateyama Alpine Garden, over 500 species of rare alpine plants await you. Admission is free, so feel free to stop by. The alpine garden in midsummer feels like a paradise above the clouds.
Please note that the trails may be slippery depending on the weather, so we recommend wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots for safety.

Higashitateyama Gondola Lift

If you’re driving yourself, it’s also possible to access the summit of Mt. Higashidate with just one gondola ride. The Higashidateyama Gondola Station is located a short walk downhill from the parking located in front of Hoppo Onsen bus stop (free of charge). Tickets can be purchased at the gondola station.

Takamagahara Summer Lift

From Takamagahara, take the summer lift and walk uphill for about 5 minutes along the ski slope from the drop-off point to reach the Higashitateyama Gondola Station. Although a short walk is required, the refreshing views make it well worth the effort.

Higashitateyama Alpine Panorama Course

A loop route that takes you to the Higashidateyama Alpine Plants Garden using the Higashidateyama Gondola Lift (one-way) and the Takamagahara Summer Lift (one-way). Free shuttle bus service will be provided.

Maeyama Pair Lift

If you’re planning to hike the popular Ikemeguri Trail, this lift is the perfect starting point.
When the lift is not operating or outside of business hours, the summit of Mt. Mae is still accessible on foot. (1km, 20-30 mins by foot, 100m elevation)

Mt. Yokote Sky-Lator & Sky Lift

The view from Yokoteyama Ski Area (the highest ski area in Japan!) is truly breathtaking. Take the outdoor escalator “Sky-Lator” and transfer to the lift to enjoy the refreshing climate and stunning scenery. At the summit, you’ll find Japan’s first crumpet specialty cafe the Crumpet Cafe and a Sky View Terrace. The Japanese highest bakery Yokoteyama Summite Hutte Bakery is also a must-visit.
Since the elevation is high, it can feel chilly at times. We recommend bringing a jacket!

Shibutoge Romance Lift

This lift provides access to the summit of Mt. Yokote from the Shibutoge (Shibu Pass) side.
Nearby, you’ll find the highest point on Japan’s national highways. Depending on the weather, you may be treated to a sea of clouds, misty landscapes, or a sky full of stars at night.
